Giraffes!

Finally!

I always get nervous when I’m starting a new project and it takes me while to get past the self-doubt.
This is my largest project to date, so it sat in my to-do list for quite a while.

I just love these giraffes and I love the way they look in my office (and the double-takes I get when people walk past my door!).

The design of the giraffes is by Papercraftfreak on Etsy, but the mounting and other embellishments are mine. I used Canson 140lb/300gm watercolor paper so it’s stiff enough to hold the shape.

I built the baby first and I guess I wasn’t paying attention because I was really surprised at the size!

The head was next, and I built it while on vacation in Maine. Here’s the view from the dining room table (my temporary studio!) in a great little lakeside cottage along the shore of Winter Harbor.

Next came the mounting, and I wanted the Mama to look like she was looking through a window. There were many, many variations of the frame, the leaves and thorns until I finally had something I liked. The leaves on the top are just generic, but I’m hoping I did a decent job with the Acacia Bush with the thorns.

To finish off the wall, I added a photograph of mine from my trip to Africa, and a paper cutting that I’d done from another photo from that trip. Can you tell I was fascinated with the giraffes?!
